Crenshaw High School Dedicates Outdoor Basketball Court

Refurbished Court A Legacy of 2023 CFP National Championship

An outdoor basketball court at historic Crenshaw High School was transformed with a new surface for students. It was also painted in bold school colors and Cougars graphics, as well as new glass backboards and rims.

The court was dedicated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that included elected officials, followed by sports equipment giveaways from the LA84 Foundation and the Play Equity Fund.

The event was spearheaded by It's Bigger Than Us (IBTU), a local organization committed to transforming South Los Angeles communities through school programs, with a focus on youth development, community engagement, and holistic learning experiences.

Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) served as MC of the event. Crenshaw legend Marques Johnson – who played 11 seasons in the NBA and was inducted in both the College Basketball and the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame – attended the unveiling.

“This is about planting seeds of community,” Kamlager-Dove said, thanking partners like It’s Bigger Than Us, LA84 Foundation, Play Equity Fund, and LAUSD for investing in youth and creating what she called “a beautifully refurbished place… where young ones can practice their hoops and their free throws and their three-point shots.”

Funding for the court’s refurbishment came from the 2023 College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship, through a partnership between the College Football Playoff Foundation, the Los Angeles College Football Playoff National Championship Host Committee, LA84 and the Play Equity Fund as part of the Champions Educate Here program.

This is about more than basketball,” said Renata Simril, President of the Play Equity Fund. “It’s about honoring Crenshaw’s role as a hub of excellence and creating spaces where young people can dream big.”

Since 2022, the program has provided support for educational initiatives in school districts across the region as a legacy of the College Football Playoff National Championship at SoFi Stadium on Jan. 9, 2023.

The event was attended by LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, Dr. Andre Spicer, Region South Superintendent, and Board Member Sherlett Hendy Newbill, who celebrated Crenshaw High School as an anchor of the community

The dedication began with a prayer led by Pastor Eddie Anderson of Partnership for Growth LA, grounding the celebration in gratitude and vision. The event included a health fair, demonstrations by the CHS basketball team, musical performances, and community resources.
