The Los Angeles World Cup 2026 Host Committee, in collaboration with the Play Equity Fund, is pleased to announce the launch of its Grow the Game of Soccer Clinic Series, a community legacy program that will use the spotlight of the world’s largest single-sport event to inspire the next generation of soccer players, coaches, and referees across the region.The Grow the Game of Soccer initiative will feature innovative, free clinics leading up to next summer’s FIFA World Cup 26™ that will bring together the region’s professional soccer clubs — LA Galaxy, Los Angeles Football Club, and Angel City Football Club – along with Cal South and local soccer stakeholders to elevate skills, build confidence, and spark a lifelong passion for the game. The Grow the Game of Soccer Clinic Series will kick off on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the Los Angeles City College Soccer Field, with a coaching clinic that will introduce a new training approach that emphasizes broader youth development, not just soccer skills. The clinic will equip grassroots coaches from communities around Greater LA with tools to better understand how the sport can support young people’s emotional growth through physical activity and building meaningful relationships.  Participating coaches will receive a playbook developed by the Play Equity Fund, the Center for Healing and Justice Through Sport (CHJS) and Cal South and will be based on “healing-centered” techniques to promote inclusion and support youth who may have experienced injustice or trauma.   The Grow the Game of Soccer Clinic Series will include: <ul><li>Youth Clinics — designed to develop and empower young players on the field and in life.  </li><li>Coaching and Referee Clinics — will feature a curriculum that will help participants understand how sport can support resilience, growth, and leadership. LONG BEACH, CALIF. – Standing at a podium at the Boys and Girls Club of Long Beach’s Westside Clubhouse, Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson discussed the Nike-supported Future of Youth Sport Neighborhood Initiative and highlighted four local grantees joining: the Boys and Girls Clubs of Long Beach, Khmer Girls in Action, 5-Eleven Hoops, and Books and Buckets.
 
Launched by the Play Equity Fund in 2022 in Watts and Boyle Heights, with support from Nike, the initiative continues its aims to expand youth sports access through community partnerships, with a focus on increasing and retaining girls’ participation in sports. This multi-year investment includes not only funding but also learning and capacity-building efforts to develop community solutions and remove participation barriers in Long Beach.“Bringing the Future of Youth Sport Neighborhood Initiative to Long Beach is about equity, opportunity and giving every young person a fair shot to thrive. The funds will help strengthen KGA’s Youth Leadership Development Program by enhancing and expanding their wellness and holistic youth development framework. The program includes regular movement-based sessions, such as yoga, mindfulness, and Southeast Asian dance, taught by classically trained Cambodian dancers.• <a href="https://5elevenhoops.org/">5-Eleven Hoops</a>: 5-Eleven Hoops works to create environments where families and youth of all backgrounds, particularly those managing Autism and other intellectual or physical disabilities, can participate together. Funds will be used to help increase the participation of girl-identified youth in existing sports programs, including basketball, football, soccer, track, and baseball. The organization offers its programs to all youth; however, it focuses on serving youth diagnosed with Autism, Down Syndrome, and other intellectual disabilities.• <a href="https://www.booksandbuckets.org/">Books &amp; Buckets</a>: Books &amp; Buckets blends athletics, academics, and advocacy to support youth ages 8 to 24, primarily in Central and West Long Beach, with a strong focus on the Washington Neighborhood. Funding will support the launch of a girl-identified basketball program with gender-specific clinics, leadership development, and wellness workshops to assist 40 female-identifying youth. Books and Buckets will also explore formal coaching certification through USA Basketball.With 21% of its population under 18 and 61% of children qualifying for free and reduced lunch, the City of Long Beach has a sizable youth population in need of accessible sports opportunities. The city also has a significant gap in girl-specific sports programming, especially in underserved communities. The City’s Office of Youth Development plays a vital role in coordinating youth services across Long Beach, focusing on youth well-being and equity. Thousands of families and children celebrated in front of the LA84 Foundation campus in Historic West Adams as they participated in the LA84 and Play Equity Fund Play Day Block Party, the sprawling annual community street festival. 
Held in celebration of the National Day of Play on June 28, the Play Day Block Party highlighted the transformational power of sports, play and movement in the lives of youth. Live music and entertainment, over 20 sport and play activations, community booths, an art installation and food trucks greeted attendees in a fun day of discovery and physical activity at the free event. 
With its emphasis on sports, community engagement, music, art, food and culture, the Play Day Block Party also recreated the enduring impact and solidarity that the 1984 Summer Olympic Games had on the region and globally.
“The Play Day Block Party is more than a celebration — it’s a reminder of the power of play to reconnect us with our inner child and each other,” said Renata Simril, President &amp; CEO of the LA84 Foundation and President of the Play Equity Fund. “On the National Day of Play, we honor play not just as a childhood activity, but as a pathway to healing, belonging and joy. A community mural capturing the event was created by the Mural Workforce Academy, a program of Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass addressed attendees, as did several elected officials.
“This is what we want to see for our wonderful city, everybody celebrating,” said Mayor Bass. 
The Play Day Block Party kicked off with a procession of over two dozen Olympians and Paralympians. With thousands of attendees enjoying the afternoon on West Adams Boulevard, the event was held in cooperation with the Office of Heather Hutt, Los Angeles City Councilwoman for the Tenth District.
“I am honored to have the return of the Play Day Block Party in Council District 10,” said Councilwoman Hutt. “The LA84 Foundation and the Play Equity Fund create a joyful experience of sport, play, and movement for thousands of Angelenos of all ages — capturing the spirit of unity that connects us all.”Eight Los Angeles pro teams participated in the Play Day Block Party, including the Rams, Dodgers, LAFC, Angel City Football Club, LA Kings, Sparks, Galaxy, and the Clippers. Mascots and cheer squads from many of the teams joined the celebration with LA84’s Sam the Eagle. 
The National Day of Play brought together organizations across the country to emphasize and promote the lifelong benefits of sports, play and movement for people of all ages.The Play Equity Fund, LA84’s charitable partner, sent 120 boxes of sports equipment to grassroots organizations across the country to hold simultaneous Play Day celebrations. Over 17,000 youth were slated to join in after receiving these “Play Day In A Box” kits. 
While the LA84 and Play Equity Fund Play Day was the largest celebration, other communities joined in. Among the cities participating in National Day of Play were the Philadelphia Youth Sports Collaborative, the King County Play Equity Coalition in Seattle, and the Central Ohio Youth Sports Collaborative in Columbus, Ohio, to name a few.

As California prepares to become the center of the sports and tourism world, the state must examine the status of youth sports throughout the state to ensure that all youth are accessing the powerful benefits of sports, play, and physical activity.” AB 749 directly responds to the findings of the 2024 <a href="https://2024report.la84.org/">Play Equity Report</a> commissioned by the LA84 Foundation. This groundbreaking study released late last year highlighted gaps in play equity, barriers to youth sports participation and play, and the challenges that today’s youth face in engaging in sports and physical activity. The report revealed that:• Nearly two-thirds of California youth don’t meet the Centers for Disease Control’s physical activity guidelines.• One in 3 youth stopped playing sports in the past two years.“Without sports, my early participation on sports teams, and with some great coaches, I wouldn’t be standing here today,” added Derek Fisher, five-time NBA Champion, high school basketball coach, and parent. “Despite the many benefits of playing sports, access to youth sports in California schools remains fragmented and unequal. LOS ANGELES – As the LA84 Foundation launches into a fifth decade of supporting positive youth development through sport as a legacy of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, it has unveiled a new branding campaign with its charitable partner, the Play Equity Fund that includes a national public service announcement, strategic logo redesigns and revamped websites.‘Play Because It Matters’ is a national campaign that builds off the success of celebrating the 40 years of impact of LA84 in 2024 that included a series of major events with Olympians, recognition by elected officials, and a resolution in Congress that honored its work. Over four decades, the LA84 Foundation has supported over 4 million youth, funded 2,500 nonprofit organizations, built or refurbished 400 courts, pools and fields, and trained 200,000+ coaches in Southern California.The campaign features Los Angeles Lakers legend Derek Fisher narrating <a href="https://youtu.be/1wzFeeSLMr4?si=PsDT66kcCh32U12i">a national public service announcement</a> as he plays basketball with children at a local playground. In Los Angeles — a city defined by its diversity — soccer is more than a game; it’s a force for connection, opportunity, and community.The Los Angeles World Cup 2026 Host Committee, in partnership with the Play Equity Fund, has unveiled a series of World Cup legacy programs themed “Celebrate the Extraordinary” to create meaningful, long-lasting impact across the Los Angeles region by using the power of the World’s Game.The World Cup is the largest sporting event in the world, and Los Angeles will host eight matches. The Play Equity Fund’s The Alliance LA program has brought together the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) and LeadersUp with 12 pro sports teams in Southern California to launch the Alliance Sports Pathways Program (ASPP). This work-based learning initiative equips LACCD students with the necessary skills for success in the sports industry, and builds on the achievements of The Alliance LA’s high school sports pathways program.&quot;Our goal is to connect students with talent from marginalized communities to the administrative leadership positions within the pro sports industry that are too often beyond the grasp of many of these students,&quot; said Renata Simril, President of the Play Equity Fund. &quot;Helping students understand the in-demand skills and recruitment practices of pro sports teams will be invaluable in demystifying the pathways to careers in sports. As Los Angeles readies to host several major sporting events over the next four years – including the World Cup and its third Olympic Games – we are working to build a bridge that connects community college students to the sports industry.&quot;ASPP offers four modules, designed to complement LACCD’s Job Readiness Course. If the study bill indicates the need and the State Legislature approves, this new entity would establish a unified, equitable, and sustainable framework for youth sports in California, ensuring that all children have the chance to engage in sports for their physical, mental, and academic benefits. “We are grateful to Assemblymember McKinnor for her commitment to explore a statewide approach to expanding access and increase sports and recreational participation for all young people, especially those in underserved communities,” said Renata Simril, President of the Play Equity Fund. “AB 749 is a much-needed step to promote policy development, equitable funding, and infrastructure improvements, helping to create a more inclusive, healthy, and engaged next generation of Californians.”“Increasing access and involvement for kids in sports is positive for young people in California,” said Marc Maye, CEO of Project Blue – an organization in South Los Angeles that promotes kids’ physical and mental health through education, programming, and other activities. “In addition to the physical benefits, research shows sports participation can help kids develop life skills. A unified approach statewide will help everyone. We appreciate Assemblymember McKinnor’s leadership on behalf of youth.”In 2024, the LA84 Foundation commissioned the <a href="https://2024report.la84.org">2024 California Play Equity</a> Report, a first-of-its-kind study of play equity statewide, along with youth sports participation and physical activity levels. The findings included a detailed exploration of the gaps in play equity, the barriers to youth sports and play, and the challenges youth face to remain engaged in sports and physical activity. EVITARUS, a national research firm, collected the landmark survey and focus group data.The report highlighted the fragmented youth sports environment that many families across the state experience, including in-school and after-school, indicating the need for AB 749. Among several insights, the survey found nearly two-thirds of Californian youth fail to meet the CDC’s recommended guidelines for physical activity of 60 minutes of play, five times a week. And nearly 1-in-3 California youth stopped playing sports in the last two years.
